Using Design of Experiments to Minimize Variation – Case Study (Part 2)

Experiment

The goal of the experiment was to identify the variables and corresponding settings that minimize variation in the staging time. Prior experiments indicated that J-Plate Height, J-Plate Position, Singulator Spacing, and Stack Height were important. Therefore, they were included in this experiment.

The experiment was conducted as follows:

1. High and low settings representative of a reasonable operating range for the four experimental variables were selected (see Table 1).

2. Using Minitab, a two-level full factorial design for the four variables was generated (see the first four columns in Table 2).

3. 500 readings at each of the 16 run conditions were performed.

4. The mean and standard deviation of the stage times were calculated for each of the 16 run conditions (see the last two columns in Table 2).

To protect the proprietary nature of the process and experiment results, the variable settings and units on the staging time results have been changed.
